Marramarra murru (creating pathways)
Hosted at Kambri at the Australian National University, the Symposium was conducted over the course of two days, comprising seven sessions that addressed key requirements and pre-conditions to build authentic, self-determined, First Nations economies, leveraging the assets and legal rights that continue to be reclaimed by Australian First Nations peoples. Each session involved the facilitator framing the specific topic, an expert speaker(s) or discussion panel of experts discussing key aspects of the topic, followed by break-out participant working groups.
This Symposium focused on the opportunities for First Nations peoples to develop a truly self-determined Australian First Nations economy – one that leverages from the rights and assets pertaining to land, seas, inland waters and intellectual property that have been, and continue to be, reclaimed by First Nations peoples. This has been done through the progress of various international conventions, Australian jurisprudence, and the evolving policies and legislation of Australian governments.
