First Nations Portfolio Vice-President Professor Peter Yu recently attended and spoke at the Wangka Kanyilku Wangkawa: Decolonising First Nations’ Languages Conference 2023, hosted by The Goldfields Aboriginal Languages Centre Abor. Corp. (GALCAC), on Wangkatja Country in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
The conference aimed to address the decolonisation of Indigenous languages through rejuvenation processes, the rejuvenation of language domains, and the importance of linguistic rights needing to be enshrined into legislation for funding and various resources to be available.
Professor Yu also featured in a recent ABC article where himself along with several advocates called for legislative protection for First Nations languages in a bid to address the decline of native tongues across Australia.
